Austrian researchers have developed a test that can measure a persons sensitivity to obtaining hearing damage, as can be read on hear-it.org. It seems some people are more likely to obtain noise induced hearing loss than others.

The Institute of Environmental Health in Vienna developed the test and it works quite simple. Participants are briefly being exposed to noise of around 100dB, resulting in temporary hearing loss. Afterwards and audiogram is made trough which can be measured how long it takes for the participant to recover.

According to the research, participants who recovered more slowly than others proved to be more sensitive to hearing damage in the long-term as well. Yet DEC recommends also those with less sensitive ears to still always wear hearing protection when exposed to noises over 85dB.
