DYNAMIC ear filter scores top marks in an independent product test
Earplugs are no longer a niche product. Today, more and more people understand how damaging loud music or other sources of noise can be to our hearing. Anyone who has ever come home from a concert or club with ringing in their ears has experienced the warning signs of an overloaded auditory system firsthand. And it’s not only loud music that poses a risk. Power tools, machinery, air travel, and even open-plan offices can expose us to continuous noise that undermines concentration, causes stress, and leads to sensory overload.
What makes good earplugs?
Effective earplugs reduce sound to a safe level without compromising clarity. That is why it pays to choose high-quality earplugs that provide reliable protection while keeping music clear and balanced. To achieve this, earplugs need to provide even attenuation across all frequencies, ensuring that the sound remains full and natural. At the same time, voices, conversations, and warning signals should remain clearly audible even while wearing earplugs.
But which products deliver what they promise?
This is where the independent platform HearAdvisor comes in. Specializing in the scientific evaluation of hearing protection, HearAdvisor provides clear and transparent assessments. Unlike other test portals, HearAdvisor openly discloses its methods and explains exactly how ratings are determined. For reliable results, a wide range of products is analyzed and compared under controlled laboratory conditions. Rather than relying on subjective impressions, HearAdvisor uses standardized measurement procedures to objectively evaluate both sound quality and noise reduction.
Two of the DYNAMIC ear filters score top marks
In its most recent 2025 comparison study, HearAdvisor analyzed 56 different earplugs. The -20 dB DYNAMIC ear filter took first place, outperforming every other product tested. It stood out for its excellent sound quality and strong loudness reduction.
The -25 dB DYNAMIC ear filter also performed well, placing 9th overall and ranking among the top 25 percent of all tested products. It combines strong noise reduction with good sound quality.
How can sound quality be measured objectively?
HearAdvisor’s independent lab uses a KEMAR dummy head, a testing system designed to replicate the human ear with high accuracy. Through a multi-channel speaker array, both music and pink noise are played from different directions to simulate a concert-like environment. Each pair of earplugs is tested repeatedly in various wearing positions.
Two aspects are evaluated:
-
Loudness reduction: How much is the overall sound pressure level reduced across the full audible frequency range?
-
Sound quality: How natural and detailed do highs, mids, and lows remain?
This process produces an objective overall picture of both protective performance and acoustic fidelity for every product tested.
What the KEMAR dummy test does not measure
While KEMAR measurements provide reliable data on attenuation and sound quality, they cannot capture every factor relevant to users. For instance, directional hearing, our ability to localize sounds, can be impaired if the pinna is partially covered by the earplugs. Other everyday aspects such as comfort, fit, or long-term wearability cannot be fully assessed in the lab either.
The DYNAMIC ear filter is designed to sit discreetly and pressure-free in the ear canal. This way, it does not cause discomfort when wearing helmets or headsets. It also allows air to circulate and prevents moisture and heat from building up in the ear. Factors such as these are just as important for everyday use and should be considered when making a purchase decision.
Here’s how you can experience the sound quality
HearAdvisor not only shows numbers, but it also lets you listen. Using level-matched audio samples, you can directly experience how different earplugs affect the sound. The playback volume is adjusted to prevent quieter recordings from biasing the comparison. This allows you to judge how authentic music remains when using earplugs.
The selection includes a wide range of genres, from pop and jazz to metal, rock, and classical, making it easy to assess the earplugs in real-world listening scenarios. This method is available for all tested products and offers a transparent side-by-side comparison.
Independent testing for the best sound and protection
Today, more people than ever are taking proactive steps to protect their hearing and prevent tinnitus or long-term hearing loss. Knowing that protection does not mean sacrificing sound quality makes it much easier to use earplugs in everyday life. Independent test methods provide clarity in a crowded market and reveal which products truly deliver on their promises.
The 2025 test winner, the -20 dB DYNAMIC ear filter, is ideal for concerts and festivals, motorsports, live events, cinema visits, and even for protecting children’s ears. It is available in our shop as a single acoustic filter or as part of our complete set, which includes three different acoustic filters and an impulse noise filter.
